people want to come to our country by the thousands. the world knows the united states is the land of opportunity. let’s acknowledge and learn from our past. let’s strive to be better in every area. let’s work to be even more of the “shining city on a hill” as ronald reagan challenged us. but…let’s be thankful for the united states of america. if you enjoyed this blog post or found it helpful share it with others: posted in uncategorized | leave a reply trying to make a better yesterday….. posted on october 15, 2015 by paul mcdill “trying to make a better yesterday will lead to a bad tomorrow !” during my time in israel, we heard from a business man who created a great business there dealing with olive oil production and its waste. he spoke to us about some of the conflict between israel and the surrounding countries, in particular syria. as he spoke to us, one of the things he told us was that “trying to make a better yesterday will lead to a bad tomorrow .” my mind has returned to that statement so many times over the past weeks. i think about all the times i have counseled with people who were really trying to “make yesterday better”. i can think about people who were trying to make yesterday better by wishing for better past treatment by others (as if wishing can change the past) and people who were trying to make yesterday better by wishing they had done things differently themselves. i’ve seen people fall into this trap two different ways. sometimes people wish that people in their past would have treated them better. they feel like they were mistreated or treated unfairly by parents, teachers, school mates, friends, enemies, neighbors, their dogs, or the neighbors’ dogs. and, in the spirit of fairness, most often, they are correct. usually, it is the case…someone should have treated them better. the other way that i see people fall into this trap is with regret over their own decisions and actions. they think about choices they made that were unwise, unkind, unrighteous, unbecoming, or just plain stupid (unsmart?). they made choices that came with a price tag they were not prepared to pay. it could have been a moral lapse, a financial decision, words spoken out of anger, or just an ill-advised spring break. the problem with both cases is that “wishing” doesn’t change anything. trying to make the past better is like trying to change the orbit of the earth by jumping up and down. at the end of the day, the earth will be on same orbit, and you will be exhausted. it’s an exercise in futility to try to make yesterday better. so how do you live with a past you wish was different? 1. you learn from it. how do wish people would have treated you differently? what could you have done to change the way you were treated, if anything? what caused you to make the poor decisions you did? you would be a fool not to learn from the past so that you are not destined to repeat it. 2. you forgive. if you were mistreated by others, you make a decision to forgive them. if what you went through was so traumatic you can not forgive the offender, you go to counseling with the purpose of being able to forgive them. if you were the one that caused the harm to your own life, you forgive yourself (yes, you are allowed to do that). if you are a believer, this step isn’t optional, we are commanded to forgive just as christ forgave us. 3. you live in today. make today a new day. live in the present. the truth is today is the only day you have. you can’t make any changes to yesterday, and you may not even have a tomorrow , so make today your masterpiece. if you enjoyed this blog post or found it helpful share it with others: posted in uncategorized satan’s favorite lie posted on september 24, 2015 by paul mcdill i have longed believed that one of satan’s favorite (and most effective) lies is “the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.” i have, through the years, seen this lie devastate the lives of many people. there is something in many of us that thinks life would be easier / better if we could just make it to the other side of the fence. satan has been using this lie since the beginning, and he started in the garden of eden with adam and eve. think about it, how many times have you been tempted to think in this way? you get a new job, and it’s great for a w
